What plastic does to your coffee
Plastic and water do not mix well. Not even cold water.
Every time water sits in a plastic container - your electric kettle, your drip machine's water tank, a plastic water filter pitcher, a plastic filter basket - the plastic releases microscopic particles and chemical compounds into the water. Heat speeds this up dramatically, but cold water sitting in plastic does it too.

The numbers from peer-reviewed research are not small.
A 2025 study on polypropylene kettles, published in npj Emerging Contaminants (Nature), found that the first boil of a new plastic kettle released approximately 12 million nanoplastic particles per milliliter - about 3 billion particles in a single 250ml cup of tea or coffee. A separate study by the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur measured what happens when a hot drink sits in a paper cup - which is lined with a thin plastic film to make it waterproof. Within just 15 minutes at 85-90°C, each 100ml of liquid contained roughly 10.2 billion nanoplastic particles and 25,000 microplastic fragments, along with fluoride, sulfates, and trace heavy metals. Cold water storage matters too. A 2022 study from the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology found that everyday plastic products release trillions of microscopic plastic particles into water even at room temperature. Read the NIST report. So a plastic water filter pitcher, a plastic water bottle, or a plastic coffee reservoir left sitting overnight is still shedding particles into whatever water it holds.
Where do those particles end up? Increasingly, inside you. A 2024 study in Nature Medicine found microplastics in every single human brain sample analyzed, with brain concentrations 50% higher in 2024 than in 2016 - plastic is accumulating in human tissue over time. What metal does to your coffee
Metal is not as bad as plastic. But it is not neutral either. And in some cases, it is closer to plastic than most people realize.
